Why the Cedars Lift n’ Move?
The event supports Pediatric-Oncology Research and Palliative care in honour of Liam Armstrong and Melissa Martella (their stories can be found below). The words “Lift n’ Move” from the name is a motto that is embedded into the heart and soul of the event. “Lift” honours Liam and “Move” honours Melissa. Together we will lift and move for Liam, Melissa and anyone impacted by Cancer.
Liam & Melissa’s Story
Liam Armstrong was only 2 years old when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and underwent four years of treatment on Sarah’s Floor at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. He underwent countless rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant. With his warm smile and bright spirit, Liam had an impact on everyone he met, and will be remembered and missed forever. His memory lives on in the hearts and minds of those he touched. In order to give back to the amazing doctors and nurses who took the utmost care in treating Liam, and to help all children fighting cancer, his family has created a fund to honour his memory: The Liam Armstrong Fund for Pediatric-Oncology. Their goal is to support children and their families who face pain and uncertainty every day because of cancer, and to try to make their lives a little bit easier.
Melissa was a few days away from her 30th birthday when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer. It was also a year after she had given birth to her son Orlando. After months of treatment and a poor prognosis of overcoming the disease, she bravely decided to stop conventional treatment and enjoy the little time she had left with her loved ones. Melissa and her family received wonderful support from the palliative care department and after a two year battle with cancer, she passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 32.
